5,000 years ago – early artwoks depict Oud like instruments being played. 4,000 years back, Tanburs (early fretless forerunners of the guitar) were being played in Egyptian ensembles. A lute like instrument with a long neck and three strings, the modern versions tend to have tied frets on the neck.
2,000 years ago – Nangarhar, East Afghanistan – The Rabab, a skin-covered fretless lute is in common use.
