Quick Review

Eric Jackson – Is This What Remains?

Released February 15, 2019 Eric Jackson’s “Is this what Remains?’ a four track EP of ambient guitar music that can be performed live, the technicalities of which I’ll let Eric himself deal with. I’m a big fan of the ambient, so for me it is a real treat, go listen or buy at bandcamp.

Is This What Remains

In his own words…

Four ambient sketches that aim to set tone, create mood and situate the listener in a sustained place.

Like all ambient music, the ability to fade into the background is always possible, though I recommend listening without distractions such as screens, web surfing, etc. and without headphones to allow the sound to permeate the air.

This is an ambient guitar EP produced over 6-weeks as a part of Chord’s of Orion’s 6-Week Ambient Guitar Workshop.

The project started out with an initial set of constraints and parameters: Stick to the same signal chain, keep the recordings simple and use the same guitar for each piece. For me, I added the constraint of creating pieces that could only be performed live. While these were all recorded to tracks that slightly exceeded one of the initial constraints, that of only two tracks, all of these pieces can be performed live using the same signal chain I used to record them.

I explored a number of approaches to these pieces, trying to find what felt most natural and most fitting for the project. In the end these pieces are the result of allowing melodic implications and textural creations, all originating from the guitar, to permeate the soundscape, with slight adjustments to pedals as the loops continued to play over and over again.

Only one effect was swapped out in the process of recording and I made a couple of adjustments to the original tracks in post. Otherwise this is as pure a representation as possible of the generative process I used to create these pieces.

In his own words…
I’ve written pieces specifically for a March 16th performance at the incredible Westminster Presbyterian Church in Bufalo, NY.

Very much looking forward to performing at the state-of-the-art Ciminelli Hall at Buffalo State College on March 19, 2019 at 7:30pm. My harp guitar in 360-degree surround sound should be awesome! Come celebrate this night of music with me.
